Disease Detectives
Tests a duo's knowledge of epidemiology and public health and their ability to apply that knowledge to case studies. One note sheet is allowed.
Ecology
Tests a duo's knowledge of ecology and adaptations in a subset of North American biomes, which change every year. The biomes tested in the 2023-2024 season will be the taiga, the tundra, and deciduous forests. One note sheet is allowed.
Forestry
Tests a duo's ability to identify species on a list of North American trees, which can be found on the Rules Manual, then answer questions about those trees, from structural to ecological to economic characteristics. Each team may bring a binder containing any information compiled before the tournament, as well as any commercial field guide.
Anatomy and Physiology
Tests a duo's knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of 3 human body systems, which change every year. The systems tested in the 2023-2024 season will be cardiovascular, lymphatic, and excretory. One note sheet is allowed.
Microbe Mission
Tests a duo's knowledge of microbiology, microscopes, and a list of diseases. One note sheet is allowed.

Dynamic Planet
Tests a duo's knowledge of a topic in geology, which changes each year. The topic tested in the 2023-2024 season will be large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth's crust such as tectonics. Each team may bring a binder containing any information compiled before the tournament.
Fossils
Tests a duo's ability to identify species and other taxa on a list of ancient organisms, which can be found on the Rules Manual, and one's ability to answer questions about those fossils relating to past environments and ecosystems, adaptations, evolutionary relationships, and stratigraphy. Each team may bring a binder containing any information compiled before the tournament.
Road Scholar
Tests a duo's ability to use topographic, geologic, and other maps to answer interpretative questions.
Meteorology
Tests a duo's knowledge of basic meteorology and a topic, which changes each year, as well as their ability to use that knowledge to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses relating to that topic. The topic for the 2023-24 season will be the factors that contribute to, cause, and influence Severe Weather and Storms.
Reach for the Stars
Tests a duo's knowledge of basic astronomy and a topic, which changes each year. The topic for the 2023-24 season will be the formation and early-stage evolution of stars and their observation across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Can't Judge a Powder
Tests a duo's ability to perform experiments to identify an unknown powder and support their identification using collected data, then answer questions about that powder.
Crime Busters
Tests a duo's ability, given a scenario and possible suspects, to perform and interpret lab tests to solve the crime and answer questions relating to general forensics chemistry and analysis. Each team may bring two note sheets.
Air Trajectory
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to design, construct, and calibrate a device capable of launching projectiles onto a target within a set of parameters that are specified during the tournament.
Optics
Tests a duo's knowledge of optics, such as reflection, refraction, critical angle, the electromagnetic spectrum, lenses, and mirrors, as well as their ability to position mirrors around a barrier to shine a laser on a target. Each team may bring a binder containing any information compiled before the tournament.
Wind Power
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to build a blade assembly device that can capture wind power, in addition to answering questions relating to alternative energy.

Wheeled Vehicle
Technology & Engineering
Roller Coaster
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to design, construct, and test a Roller Coaster track that is capable of guiding a ball that only uses gravitational potential energy to reach the end of the track as close as possible to a Target Time.
Wheeled Vehicle
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to design, build, and test a Wheeled Vehicle that is powered only by a non-metallic, elastic material to travel a distance as quickly and accurately as possible.
Tower
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to design and build a Tower Structure meeting requirements specified in the rules manual to achieve the highest structural efficiency during the tournament.
Flight
Requires a duo, before the tournament, to construct and optimize a rubber-powered aircraft that must achieve maximum airtime during the tournament.

Inquiry & Nature of Science
Experimental Design
Tests a trio's ability to design, construct, and write a lab report on an experiment that is only revealed during the tournament.
Fermi Questions
Tests a duo's ability to think of terms that begin with a given letter to match given science categories.
Write It Do It
Requires one partner to write a description of an object and how to build it, without any images, and the other partner to reconstruct the object only using the description.
Codebusters
Tests a trio's ability to decode encrypted messages in historical and modern advanced ciphers.
