Science Olympiad competitions are similar to track and swim meets

Tournaments consist of 23 events in various STEM fields that require teamwork, preparation, and commitment throughout the year.

Each event generally has one or two of the following:

  • A written test at the approximate level of an intermediate college course, with the assistance of a note sheet or sometimes a binder.

  • A lab portion involving hands-on and/or analytical work.

  • Constructing and testing a device prior to the competition that can perform a specific function as best as possible during the competition.

All events allow 2 or more students to compete together, and a portion of these events rotate/change each year.

Competitions, which run from December through the end of February, are divided into 6 event blocks, so students generally take on multiple events.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Tournament at the beginning of March qualifies the top 5-7 teams for the Ohio State Tournament in April.
